Stress, Wellbeing and the Ageing Workforce
The resources on this page relate to an event, Managing Risks to Wellbeing in an Ageing Workforce, I organised at the INEOS Conference Centre, Grangemouth. The main speakers were myself (Alan Bradshaw, Business Psychologist), Bob Cummins from Alternative Safety, and Emma Kennedy / Kathleen Houston from the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives. Bob and Emma have kindly provided recommended resources related to their talks and you'll find these if you scroll further down the page.
Alan Bradshaw's Ageing Workforce Resources
I found a wide variety of useful resources and links relating to risks relating to the ageing working population. These can be found below. Please note, links can become out-of-date and resources can be moved, so apologies in advance if this has happened since this page was published. There will still be a lot of useful stuff here, so happy digging!

Ageing Workforce: useful links and resources:
European papers on wellbeing and the ageing working population
These issues are very pertinent in Europe just now because in many countries workers have until now retired very much earlier than in the UK. This is unsustainable and is potentially a huge risk to the economies in the Euro-zone as Europe's working population is ageing rapidly (it isn't just the Euro we have to worry about!). A lot of good research and best practice is being done in Europe related to these issues. The two papers you can download below contain a large amount of useful information, including case studies from members of the European Community.
- Age Positive. Resources related to the Age Positive campaign can now be found on the DWP website. This page has a wide range of resources you can download: guidance, case studies research and statistics.
- Business Link: Business Link's website has a good set of information resources related to employing older workers.
- Age discrimination resources: Useful information on age discrimination can be found on the Directgov website and on the ACAS website.
- Age UK have some useful information in the work and learning section of their website.
- TUC: The TUC in association with CIPD have produced a guide to the issues in employing and managing older people, called the Managing Age Guide.
- Media. The Guardian recently ran a series of articles on Work Life Balance, many of which have information and statistics relating to issues of stress, wellbeing and ageing at work.

Emma Kennedy's Resources
(Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives)
Mentally Healthy Retirement: guidance for HR Professionals and employers
This information guide provides advice on good practice approaches to retirement and mental health in organisations.
Managing a Healthy Ageing Workforce: a national business imperative
The UK's ageing working population presents both an opportunity and a challenge for employers. This guide is designed to help anyone responsible for employing people to engage with the UK's changing demographics.
A review of effective interventions for mentally healthy retirement
The aim of this review was to explore the impact of the ‘retirement transition’ on mental health and wellbeing and recommendations for addressing issues arising during this period.
Ahead for Health
'Ahead for health' tackles the subject of mental health at work. The DVD encourages workers to think about their mental health and realise that there are some simple, everyday ways to stay well. It also aims to reduce stigma by giving people the confidence to discuss mental health openly in the workplace. The DVD was developed with the support of a number of companies to raise the subject of mental health in male dominated industries.
Emma also mentioned additional tools such as Work Positive and the Stress Management Competency Indicator Tools, which are already available on this site (follow the links and scroll down the pages to access these resources).
