The 4-year research programme was sponsored by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), CIPD and Investors in People (IIP).
- Phase 1 resulted in an emergent 'Management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work' with 19 competencies
- Phase 2 refined this to a Management Competency Framework consisting of 4 competencies and 12 sub-competencies and a 66-item Stress Management Competencies Indicator Tool was developed to measure the relevant competencies. (Please scroll down this page if you want to download this free tool)
- Phase 3 developed and tested a management development intervention for Line Managers, Preventing Stress: Promoting Positive Manager Behaviour. Both quantitative and qualitative evidence was gathered that demonstrated the efficacy of this approach. Train-the-trainer courses are now being organised for practitioners who wish to use the intervention with clients and for organizations who wish to use this approach in-house.
- Phase 4 was a structured follow-up to capture the different approaches taken by organizations and produce 10 longitudinal case studies. 10 organizations took part, including large public and private sector organizations.
