Management Development Checklists for Sustainable Wellbeing at Work
Recently, excellent research has been carried out by psychologist Emma Donaldson-Feilder and her colleagues at Affinity Health at Work, supported by CIPD and IOSH, which led to the development of management development checklists. Increasingly, organizations are seeing the importance (and value) of preventing stress and promoting wellbeing at work. Managers of course play a key role in this and there is a trend towards including learning around resilience and stress management in leadership development. (I blogged recently about an excellent example of one such programme in the NHS.)
A major challenge though for management development is to ensure that resulting improvements in staff wellbeing are sustainable over the longer term. This was the focus of Emma and her colleagues' excellent research, which incidentally resulted in a prestigious award from the British Psychological Society.
As the research was publicly funded, the checklists are free to access and use. I've included them below. There are 3 checklists covering three stages of management development: before, during and after. Each individual checklist has itself three elements (covering methodology aspects, manager characteristics and organizational factors), which research has indicated increase the likelihood that improvements in wellbeing from management development activities will be sustained. You can also download the research report, an overview and a document with FAQs about using the checklists.
These are excellent resources. Please use them, especially if you are looking to integrate training in resilience and stress management into your leadership development activities.
