_NICE Guidance, Tools and Resources
The wellbeing guidance, tools and resources below come from the [UK] National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). NICE issued their guidance, PH22 (which stands for Public Health Guidance 22) in November 2009. It's useful and important on a number of levels. It provides background evidence for the case for promoting mental wellbeing at work. NICE also provided a useful tool for calculating both the costs of mental ill health and stress and the likely return on investment from taking steps to improve employee wellbeing. Supporting documentation highlights best practice with regard to managing stress and wellbeing at work. It's all good stuff, evidence-based and you'd be mad not to use it to make a powerful business case for preventing stress. There's even a PowerPoint presentation you can use!
This first document is the press release that coincided with the launch of the guidance. It gives some good headline figures, an overview and some good quotes.

The document below accompanies the guidance and is all about the business case for promoting mental wellbeing at work. It has some great stats that are highly influential if you need to persuade senior colleagues about the need to take action. What is particularly useful is that there are stats about the costs of 'presenteeism', which are estimated to be approximately twice the costs of absenteeism. In the current, very difficult climate this might already be an underestimate. Please scroll down for a spreadsheet tool to calculate the costs - and likely savings if your organization takes action to promote wellbeing.

Stress Costs and ROI Tool (excel)
Below is a spreadsheet tool you can use to calculate the costs of mental ill health and stress and the likely savings if your organization takes positive action. It needs to be a more recent version of excel for it to work and you might need to enable macros. Essentially you can plug in some key stats from your organization and the tool does the rest - a useful and persuasive tool. This tool is also in the tools section of this website, where I've written some more about how it works.

The Quick Reference Guide below is what you'd expect. More depth than the flyer but states succinctly what the guidance is and what the main recommendations are.

Evidence Base
If you are interested in the evidence base upon which NICE base their guidance and tools, you'll find it in the reports below. There's some good stuff here although with a lot of detail. Probably most useful for researchers or students who want to dig into the background evidence.
